In Ghana, we say AKWAABA – Welcome Home!
Tamale is the vibrant capital of northern Ghana, known for its rich Dagomba culture, warm hospitality, and relaxed pace of life. The city blends tradition with growth, featuring lively markets like Tamale Central Market and a strong agricultural economy.
As the gateway to northern Ghana, Tamale offers easy access to top attractions such as Mole National Park and the historic Larabanga Mosque, making it an essential stop for cultural and wildlife experiences.
Northern Ghana’s eco-villages around Tamale offer an authentic look into sustainable, community-based living—where culture, nature, and craftsmanship come together.
These villages are typically made up of traditional mud huts with thatched roofs, built using local materials and designed to stay cool in the savannah climate. Life here is simple and eco-conscious, with communities relying on farming, natural resources, and shared living systems.
At the heart of many of these villages are women-led cooperatives producing shea butter and African black soap. Shea production is a deeply rooted tradition passed down through generations, where women harvest nuts from wild shea trees and transform them through a hands-on process of roasting, grinding, and kneading into rich, natural butter. (Tamale Ghana)
These cooperatives are more than just production centers—they are vital sources of income and empowerment. In many communities, shea butter and black soap production provide the main livelihood for women, supporting families and funding education and community development. (Danikom)
Visitors to these eco-villages can experience:
Live demonstrations of shea butter and black soap production
Interaction with local women artisans
Hands-on participation in traditional processing methods
Opportunities to purchase organic, ethically sourced products
The experience is both cultural and impactful—connecting you directly to the people behind globally loved natural products, while supporting sustainable rural economies.
Overall, these communities represent the true spirit of northern Ghana: resilient, resourceful, and deeply connected to tradition and the land.
